Art League of Hilton Head and The Literacy Center have teamed up in a collaborative effort entitled "Benches, Books & More!" on display May 28 to June 1 at the Art League Gallery, 14 Shelter Cove Lane.

The week-long exhibition and silent auction will feature child-sized and adult benches, tables, chairs and other furniture pieces painted by locally well-known artists inspired by, and in partnership with, 10 Lowcountry authors.

Notable artists include Addison Palmer, Dennis Lake, Amos Hummell, Andrea Studenc and Stella Lee-Anderson. The artwork on the furniture will be inspired by both adult and children's books, as well as familiar Lowcountry themes.

Authors will sign their books during the week, on the following schedule:

Sansing McPherson, "Sweat Sisters, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Connie Sewell, "Summer Saltz" books, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

May 30

Howard Rankin, "God's Waiting Room," 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

"Both organizations have a mission to enrich Hilton Head and it's great to work together to support our community," said Mary Ann Hanna, Art League board member and coordinator of the project.

"One in 11 people in Beaufort County are unable to read, write or speak English, said Pam Wall, TLC's executive director. "Proceeds from this unique event will help support the programs we offer including basic literacy, English language, workforce development, pre-GED and U.S. Citizenship classes."

Visitors to the gallery are invited to place a bid on the furniture. Proceeds from the silent auction will be divided between the two organizations.

A gala event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. June 1 at the gallery. Live music will be provided, and wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served. The silent auction will end at 8 p.m. with the announcement of bid winners.

Tickets are $10 per person, and a limited number will be sold at the Art League Gallery, Art League Academy, and online at artleaguehhi.org.
