'Wishing You the Merriest' onstage at Sun City

The Sun City Chorus and Concert Band continue their tradition of ringing in the holiday season with their performance of "Wishing You the Merriest," showing Nov. 30 through Dec. 3 in Magnolia Hall and featuring a collection of songs filled with jingles and joy.

Music director Art Hansen shared some insight into crafting the theme and choosing material for this important community event.

While working on the concept for the show, Hansen said, he was influenced by the songs of Irving Berlin, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and others who helped shape and create this holiday tradition.

"The holiday 2017 show is designed to appeal to a broad cultural audience," Hansen said. "Contemporary arrangements of traditional texts and original music convey the appeal for peace, brotherhood and family."

A stirring rendition of "Let There Be Peace on Earth" will fill the auditorium with universal sentiments of the holidays.

"The Sky Can Still Remember," "Rejoice! Noel!" and "As With Gladness Men of Old" for choir and orchestra, arranged by Joshua Spacht, comprise the new and modern offerings of poems and hymns written in the latter part of the 19th century. These fresh, rhythmic arrangements lift up voice and instrument in joyful, spirited song and surely will become perennial favorites.

Rounding out the program, much-loved seasonal melodies bring the special holiday spirit front and center.

Finally, what holiday musical showcase would be complete without the "Hallelujah Chorus"? Those who have attended the Sun City Chorus shows know that a performance of this enduring favorite will close the show on that "perfect pitch."

Performance time for Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 is 7 p.m. and curtain for the Dec. 3 matinee is 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $24 each; pre-purchase tickets for the full season are $22 each and are available through Nov. 29. The box office is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and also one hour prior to each performance.
