Matthew Sherburne of Bluffton was awarded the 2020 Eagle Scout of the Year by the South Carolina Department of the American Legion.

The prestigious award is given to the most deserving Eagle Scout in the state.

Sherburne has been an active member of the Boy Scouts for eight years, starting in the third grade as a Cub Scout.

He was an attendee at both the National Jamboree 2018 and the World Jamboree 2019, and is a member of ATAS, the World Fraternity for Eagle Scouts.

Sherburne was also selected by the American Legion to be a representative at Boys' State 2020 (which ultimately was canceled this year due to COVID-19).

Sherburne has also worked many hours of community service, including serving as an overnight host for Family Promise of Bluffton, and working with the Boys and Girls Club of Bluffton in various capacities. He also is active in his local church.

Sherburne's intention for his future is to attend college and work toward a civil or mechanical engineering degree.
