Escape to Haig Point for a day of golf in a natural setting
There's something magical and soothing about spending a day on a small island. Even if Haig Point on Daufuskie Island is just across Calibogue Sound from Harbour Town, and a quick 40-minute ferry ride from the Embarkation Dock near Palmetto Bay, it feels like it is a world away from the hustle, bustle and stress of everyday life.
The goal of my group was to experience the legendary golf links at Haig Point and, as we were whisked to the course in a snappy golf cart (there are no motor vehicles on the island), we viewed beautiful homes and manicured landscapes that set the tone for the community.
We also passed by the historic Haig Point lighthouse, which was built in 1873 and had been used as a beacon for the northern tip of Daufuskie. The lighthouse is available for tours when not occupied by guests or being used as a wedding or event venue.
At the 30th Hole Grill in the Clubhouse, we experienced a wonderfully delicious lunch served by Bunny, a long-time associate at Haig Point, who has a relaxed demeanor and a friendly style that added to the pleasurable experience of the day.
The other dining venue at Haig Point is the more formal Calibogue Club, which offers a gourmet menu and spectacular views of the sound.
We then had the choice of golf courses to enjoy. The Haig Point 20-hole Reese Jones Signature Course, which is set along Calibogue Sound, has two distinct routings: the Haig, which has fewer forced carries, and the Calibogue, which is more challenging.
This course has appeared in Golf Digest's "100 Greatest Courses" and "Best In State" and has earned a coveted position in Golf Magazine's "Top 100 In The World."
There is also the nine-hole Osprey, which we chose to play, that is geared more to family play or a quick outing. We thought we would save the more challenging courses for our next trip.
The Osprey was impeccably groomed and offers breathtaking beauty and amazing views. Also, unlike many of the courses on the mainland, the homes on the course were sparse so we truly felt one with nature.
So, how can you experience this magnificent private community? Haig Point offers an affordable three-day, two-night Discovery Experience that includes accommodations at the Strachan Mansion or the 1873 Lighthouse, round of golf for two people, a breakfast, lunch and dinner and more.
Simply visit www.haigpoint.com/lifestyle/community to apply. It will be a visit to a community you will not soon forget. Who knows, maybe someday you'll call it home.
