La Isla magazine and the Lowcountry Immigration Coalition will host the fifth annual Latin Music Festival from noon to 10 p.m. Oct. 16 at Shelter Cove Community Park on Hilton Head Island.
The Latin Music Festival is the region's largest Latino festival.
It will include music by various bands throughout the day, folkloric dancing and a dance competition, authentic Latin food, children's activities and vendors with a wide range of merchandise.
The feature event of the festival is the Miss La Isla Community Pageant. The pageant is a community educational and fundraising event geared toward helping non-profit organizations throughout the Lowcountry.
The pageant program focuses on building connections between age groups, teaching youth to successfully engage in causes they care about by making an impact in their local communities.
The young lady who raises the most money for her non-profit will be crowned Miss La Isla Magazine 2017 the night of the festival.
Through "Develop, Advance, Return" (DAR), La Isla magazine's Young Latinas Leadership Program provides an opportunity for young people to acquire leadership, public speaking and strategic planning skills as a way to advance their personal and career goals.
"DAR" is also Spanish for "to give." La Isla's DAR leadership program, a series of leadership sessions, is led by retired UGA faculty member Dr. Sherri Lawless.
"As we provide leadership development support and facilitate mentorship, they bring enthusiasm, creativity, and earnestness to their projects," said Lawless. "I look forward to the fundraising results and am confident that each involved non-profit will be a winner."
