|Hilton Head Lakes offers great golf, outstanding 19th hole|

(Editor's Note: This is the first of a series of articles about public golf courses open for play in the Lowcountry.)
The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes opened in 2007 and has gone through some major revisions this past year.
They hired Jon Hundley, a class A PGA Professional, who has been in the Lowcountry for more than 30 years as a head professional. He has been directly involved in the rebirth of this facility. Improvements this year include the growth of the membership.
Of primary interest to players, the golf course conditions are now the best they have ever been. The putting greens are some of the best in the area. They are Tift Eagle and are very fast, smooth and true.
The fairways are very generous, and the fairways and rough now have more definition and are in good shape. The bunkers are well placed, so bring your sand wedge.
This 18-hole Tommy Fazio course is challenging. Hole No. 18 is a great finishing hole, with water all along the left side of the fairway. The green is large and undulating and a two putt would make your day.
One of the most impressive things about Hilton Head Lakes is its practice facility. Their 36-acre practice area is the best in the Lowcountry for a public golf course.
The range has target greens, two chipping greens, a large putting green, bunkers, and a six-hole, par 3 course with holes varying in distance from 60 to 135 yards. The par 3 course is a perfect way for beginners to get ready to play golf.
Hilton Head Lakes offers beginner's leagues, and women and men's leagues that play twice a week. There are special rates for groups that want to come play the course.
Memberships are available and you don't have to be a Hilton Head Lakes property owner to join. It is easy to get a starting time and the rates are very competitive. Give them a call at 843-208-5353.
Golfers will enjoy the whole experience from the congenial bag drop area to the knowledgeable starter and the awesome 19th hole experience at South Wedge Restaurant.
Open daily from 10 a.m., South Wedge offers a great happy hour with weekly drink specials, and on Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m., you can expect ribs, wings, sliders and shrimp.
In addition, the restaurant's award-winning chef schedules occasional specialty nights, holiday dinners, Lowcountry boils, prime rib nights, Sunday brunches and more.
The South Wedge Restaurant also is a full-service caterer, serving Savannah, Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head. They cater golf outings and are a great place to come after you play golf to eat and drink.
