MUSC vascular surgeons join Beaufort Memorial Surgical Specialists

To help meet the critical need for vascular specialists in the Lowcountry, Beaufort Memorial has added two more vascular surgeons to its medical staff. Dr. Ravikumar Veeraswamy and Dr. Mathew Wooster have joined board certified vascular surgeon Dr. Chad Tober and physician assistant Annsley Troxell, as well as the four general surgeons currently practicing with Beaufort Memorial Surgical Specialists.

Both physicians are on the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and treat the entire spectrum of vascular diseases and conditions, including abdominal aortic aneurysm, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis and varicose veins.

Raised in Irmo, Dr. Veeraswamy earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his residency and fellowship at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., and an additional fellowship at Washington University.

A highly experienced surgeon who is board certified in both vascular and general surgery, Dr. Veeraswamy is professor and chief of vascular surgery at MUSC and serves as director of its residency program. Prior to joining MUSC, he was an associate professor of surgery at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, and on the clinical staff at Emory University Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for over a decade.

A South Carolina native, Dr. Wooster earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Duke University and his medical degree at MUSC. He completed his residency at the University of South Florida and joined the MUSC medical and teaching staff as assistant professor in 2017.

Board certified in vascular surgery, Dr. Wooster is also the director of the vascular surgery clerkship at MUSC, where he oversees medical students during their surgical rotations.

In addition to Dr. Tober, Dr. Veeraswamy and Dr. Wooster will be working with general surgeons Dr. Perry Burrus, Dr. Deanna Mansker, Dr. Tim Pearce and Dr. Stephen Sisco at Beaufort Memorial Surgical Specialists. The practice has offices in Beaufort at 989 Ribaut Road and in Bluffton at 11 Arley Way in Westbury Park. For more information, call 843-524-8171.

The vascular surgeons' affiliation with Beaufort Memorial Surgical Specialists is one of several collaborations between MUSC Health and the hospital. Currently BMH is affiliated with MUSC Health in cancer care and has been offering telehealth services for stroke and pediatric patients through MUSC for several years.

The two institutions have also coordinated access to pediatric sub-specialists in the area, and plan to add additional sub-specialties when Beaufort Memorial opens its Okatie Medical Pavilion later this year.

"As the need for more specialized care grows, it only makes sense for us to enter into arrangements with the best medical providers close to home," said BMH President and CEO Russell Baxley. "Not only are we bringing more providers to the market, we are also enabling patients to see MUSC specialists without having to travel to Charleston."
