Dr. Derek Barker has joined Podiatry Associates of Bluffton, the practice of Dr. Michael Edwards Jr. and Dr. Trenton Statler. Dr. Barker is now seeing patients in the practice's Bluffton and Beaufort locations.
He comes to the Lowcountry from Michigan, where he has been practicing with Metro Health, an affiliate of the University of Michigan Health System, for the past six years. He was also a clinical assistant professor at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Board-certified and a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Dr. Barker is a member of the medical staff at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
A graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical science, Dr. Barker received his medical degree from William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago, Ill. He completed his residency in podiatric medicine and surgery at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Mich., where he was chief resident and received extensive training in both surgical and non-surgical treatment of foot and ankle deformities, as well as wound care.
While completing his training, Dr. Barker worked part time at a clinic for uninsured patients in the community.
