Palmetto Electric plans to help those living in Hampton, Jasper and Southern Beaufort counties through a new voluntary initiative called Give 5. This effort is designed to assist those faced with growing rent, mortgage, food and utility bills as a result of econom-ic hardships caused by the COVID-19 crisis
Palmetto Electric is asking its members to pledge a voluntary tax-deductible donation of at least $5 to their electric bill for only one month. The program ends after the first week in June.
Members can pledge their donation by visiting the cooperative's website, palmetto.coop, or by calling the office at 1-800-922-5551. Palmetto Electric Cooperative and Operation Round Up will match the amount for every member donation, up to a total match of $50,000 each.
"Throughout our service area, it is evident that the coronavirus outbreak has impacted nearly every aspect of our members' lives. Commitment to Community is one of our core values that we take very seriously - and that's why we wanted to lend a helping hand with the Give 5 initiative," said Berl Davis, Palmetto Electric's presi-dent and CEO.
Money raised through Give 5 will be divided equally among four local nonprofit agencies, located in the Palmetto Electric's service area: Bluffton Self Help, Beaufort/Jasper Economic Opportunity Commission, Deep Well and United Ministries of Hampton.
These organizations will distribute the donated funds base on the Give 5 guidelines.
