I have been to numerous golf clinics over my 40-year teaching career. However the Adaptive Golf Experience is by far the most inspirational event that I have heard about, and I will be volunteering my time in the future.

The third Saturday of every month, golfers, golf professionals and volunteers gather at the driving range at the Legends Golf Course on Parris Island.

The clinic is open to everyone – civilians, veterans and active duty who are looking to get back into golf after an injury.

This is a fun social network that allows the disabled golfer a chance to swing a golf club. Some of the golfers have even gone out and played nine holes.

The clinic has three customized golf carts that enable those who cannot stand on their own to still hit a golf ball:

The Paragolfer cart is a maneuverable three-wheel cart that enables the golfer to stand-up while being strapped in for stability and balance.

The Eagle Stand-up is a one-person cart that can rotate the golfer to stand astride the ball.

Solo-rider is a cart that allows the golfer to drive right up to the ball, rotate the seat 350 degrees and take a swing. The cart does not damage greens, so the golfer also can use the cart to putt.

Recently the Sun City Veterans Association funded new batteries and repairs on three of the custom carts that had been sitting unused for years.

Now, several people can use them at the same time, rather that having to share just one.

The organizers are looking for more volunteers to help with the clinics. Physical education teachers, physical and occupational therapists and doctors would all make great volunteers.

They even have Ron West, a lower right leg amputee, teaching other golfers.

The next clinic is from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 17 at Parris Island. To get access onto Parris Island, you must have a valid driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance.
