Four years after suspending operations, a new, energetic group of leaders has emerged to revive the Bluffton Democratic Club in a growing community that has trended Democratic in recent years.

Club president Kathleen Mardell wanted to revive the club after seeing three precincts in Bluffton flip to blue in the 2018 election. Bluffton has seen 11.5% population growth since 2015 – an influx of about 2,000 people per year – and 73% of the population growth in Beaufort County over that span has been within the Town of Bluffton.

Additionally, much of the growth has come in the form of young families, whose hectic schedules make it difficult to get to typical political events, especially if they are not held in Bluffton. The club will provide an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone can have a voice and take a role in shaping the Bluffton community.

“Our community and candidates will benefit from having a dedicated club in the Bluffton area,” said Mardell, who organized the club’s revival along with vice president Jennifer Morrow. “We look forward to building a team with our Bluffton friends and family.”

The club’s mission is to elect Democrats and increase Democratic voter turnout in the greater Bluffton area through organizing and engaging citizens. The immediate focus will be on training precinct coordinators, organizing community volunteers, supporting Democratic candidates, planning annual community service events, and turning Bluffton blue.

Monthly meetings are planned for the first Wednesday evening of each month, and the club also plans to enjoy lively discussion at social gatherings on the third Thursday of each month at a variety of Bluffton locations.
