Harbour Town Yacht Basin will be the site March 24 for the second annual Coast Guard Appreciation Day, held during the Spring Fest celebration.

The event is presented by the Coast Guard Auxiliary Hilton Head/Bluffton Flotilla 10-11 D7, and is free and open to the public.

Active duty Coast Guardsmen and their families are invited to enter Sea Pines Resort as guests of the resort, with no gate charge.

The Coast Guard will have both a 45-foot Rescue Boat in the water and a trailered Aids to Navigation Boat on display.

The event will also mark the installation and dedication of the new 16-foot model of the USCGC Eagle at the 26-foot level of Harbour Town Lighthouse. The museum, located on three levels of the Lighthouse, features the history of the Coast Guard, examples of Coast Guard missions both domestic and foreign, and mementos collected especially for this display.

This is the only Coast Guard exhibit in the Lowcountry. It will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The installation of the 350-pound wooden model of the Coast Guard Academy’s training vessel Eagle into the Lighthouse was considered an “impossibility.” A video is available of some highlights of the installation.

In addition to the Appreciation Day activities,

Spring Fest festivities include performances by local favorite band Deas-Guyz from 1 to 4 p.m.; nautical activities featuring a variety of watersports, tours and boat rides; and various free children’s activities.

The Carolina Dreamers Car Club will have a selection of classic cars on display from noon to 4 p.m.

At about 12:30 p.m., a Coast Guard helicopter will demonstrate a search and rescue mission. The Eagle dedication with dignitaries will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Coast Guard Auxiliary Hilton Head/Bluffton Flotilla 10-11 D7 will host an information tent regarding activities and missions of the Flotilla supporting the active duty Coast Guard.

The public is invited to participate in these events, showing support for the Coast Guard and their missions while enjoying the afternoon’s events and activities.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard and supports the Coast Guard in nearly all mission areas. The Auxiliary was created by Congress in 1939.
