Audrey Tabilio enjoys dancing with her instructor, Armando Aseneta, every week at Hilton Head Ballroom Dance Studio. SANDRO VIRAG

Audrey Tabilio is a remarkable woman.

Originally from Maryland, Audrey lost her husband when she was 67 years old. After two years of tears, she decided it was time to live again. So, she picked up the phone book and looked up ballroom dance lessons. That is where her journey began.

In 2014, Audrey moved to Sun City Hilton Head and started dancing with their ballroom dance club. She heard about Hilton Head Ballroom and that there was a dance party every Tuesday night.

She decided to try it. This party really clicked for Audrey and she decided it was something she wanted to do every week.

There’s something about Audrey you should know: She dresses to the nines. Not a fan of pants, she always wears a skirt or dress, always has her hair done, and she loves a lot of bling.

Her late husband was a clothing designer so her philosophy is “when you go out – dress up!” We rarely see her wear the same thing twice when she comes to the dance party.

Audrey has no fear of dancing with anyone at the party – she will dance with the teens, the amateurs, the professionals, and she can follow anyone. She is always happy and has a contagious laugh.

Did we mention that Audrey is 89 years old? And that she also has a private dance lesson three times a week?

Audrey has a natural ability for dance and also loves the music. In fact, she knows almost every song and always sings along. She has a great appreciation for all the old style dances, like Waltz, Foxtrot and Jitterbug.

Even though Audrey dances strictly for fun, that doesn’t stop her from adding new steps and patterns to her repertoire. She keeps her instructor, Armando Aseneta, on his toes by bringing out all the old classics to dance to.

Audrey does not dance competitively but she loves to perform. She always dances in our twice-a-year Trophy Ball and is a big hit with audience. She is so happy to be on the floor and dances from her heart and the audience feels that.

Everyone admires Audrey’s dedication, discipline and passion for dance. Not to mention she is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. If Audrey had started dance in her younger years – she would definitely have made a name for herself in the competitive dance world.
