Retired Gen. Wesley Clark is uniquely qualified to open the 2019-20 Friday Speaker Series of the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head (WACHH). He will appear at the Oct. 4 event at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway on Hilton Head Island.

The year’s theme is “Deglobalization: Threats and Opportunities,” focusing on the pros and cons of diminishing interdependence and integration of nation-states. Deglobalization is the antithesis of globalization which grew from WWII until the current emergence of protectionist policies, tariffs, and eroding trade agreements.

Clark graduated first in his class from the United States Military Academy and continued studying as a Rhodes Scholar. He retired as a four-star general after a 38-year Army career including NATO Supreme Allied Commander.

His experience from Vietnam through several Balkan wars makes him particularly informed about the disintegration of the interdependence of nations and nation-states.

Gen. Clark will also discuss his new initiative, Renew America Together, a non-governmental organization designed to promote and achieve greater common ground by reducing partisan division and gridlock.

Since retiring from the military in 2000, Gen. Clark has become an investment banker, businessman, commentator, author and teacher. He entered the Democratic presidential primary before returning to the private sector in February 2004.

Clark has chaired several public and private companies, and is a progressive leader in pursuing energy solutions.
