Hospice Care of the Lowcountry has named two outstanding volunteers for its annual Volunteer of the Year awards.
The Charles Schuetz Hos-Pets Volunteer of the Year Award is presented to a volunteer who has demonstrated superior service with their dog to provide joy and comfort to patients, as well as residents in nursing and assisted living facilities.
This year, the award went to Judy and Ron VanWie, a husband and wife team who have visited facilities consistently each month, participated in facility dog events, made special visits to patient’s homes, visited the Boys and Girls Club for grief therapy, and visited schools with troubled teens in Beaufort. They are always present and giving, and kind to those they visit. Their dog Brie, is top notch.
The Judy Berg Volunteer of the Year Award is presented to a volunteer who has demonstrated superior service to patients and their families. This year’s selection was Kathy Tortorella, who is kind, devoted, committed, and has been a constant in an often-changing volunteer atmosphere for the organization for 22 years. She is a very caring, compassionate, and sensitive person. She is also a talented artist with a creative energy and soul that embodies her being.
