Please do not sell your home during Halloween – it’s just way too scary! Too many ghosts and goblins fly around and rule the night.

Additionally, on or around Oct. 31, some real estate agents might become ghostly, and prospective homebuyers with trick or treat on their mind might submit offers that are much less than your house is worth.

On the other hand, homebuyers looking at this time of the year tend to be more serious. So don’t scare them away!

Here are some ideas that might help you sell your home during the Halloween season:

  • Price your home right during Halloween and for every season of the year. Overpriced homes scare buyers any day of the year.
  • Decorate for the season. It’s OK to keep seasonal decorations up for weeks for the spirit of the season. But for the real scary stuff, put up the night of Halloween, and take down the next morning.
  • Hold a themed open house. If you and your agent are planning an open house, a tactful Halloween theme might attract buyers with children or those who are young at heart.
  • Do the trick or treat thing. Set the open house date the weekend before All Hallows’ Eve.

To bring in more buyers, offer homemade cookies and a gift certificate to the ice cream shop for the child and adult with the best costume.

Take photos to compare costumes, and have your real estate agent contact the winner or winners to pick up the prizes. Then answer any questions that they buyers have about your home.

  • Don’t overdo the decorations. A pumpkin or two is good, but don’t go wild.
