Bluffton, now is the time to focus on your preparations for a hurricane, tropical storm or major weather event. Historically speaking, our region is most vulnerable to hurricane-related storms from August through mid-October. And this past month shows us we need to be aware of every storm.

It is predicted this season will be above average in its activity. It has already been an active season, breaking records in terms of the early arrival and frequency of formed hurricanes.

Since Hurricane Matthew in 2016, our region has had storm activity every year. What is important to remember is we can put a person on the moon; however, we cannot predict hurricanes with precision. Each storm is unique with a unique track and variables that influence how that storm impacts people, property and places.

The Town of Bluffton has resources to help you prepare. The Town’s website is your information hub. It has a special hurricane section and I encourage you to peruse this section.

You can find frequently asked-questions (FAQ’s), a list of hurricane-related agencies and organizations, and the South Carolina Hurricane Guide 2020, which is published by the South Carolina Emergency Management Division. You can access these resources at

In previous years, the Town’s Emergency Management Division provided hurricane preparedness presentations to the public at the Bluffton Police Department. However, due to social distancing requirements, in-person presentations are not practical this year.

Instead, the Town’s Emergency Management team is delivering this information to the public electronically, so you can view these presentations at your convenience.

The Emergency Management Team has recorded two classes, one in English and one in Spanish.

Information covered in the video presentations are lessons learned from past storms, evacuation routes, procedures during an evacuation, as well as how to develop a plan for evacuation.

To access the videos, the links are available below, or log onto the Bluffton Police Department’s YouTube page. The presentation in English is available  at and the presentation in Spanish is at

For those who have questions after watching the videos, email Sgt. Mike Danyov at or Sgt. Bonifacio Perez at bperez@townof
