Lowcountry Community Church (LCC) recently donated $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton for the expansion of its facility to include a new Literacy Center.

“LCC has been partners with the Boys & Girls Club for many years, and many events and projects,” said Jason Best, executive pastor. “We have felt led this year to increase our partnership with them because of the wonderful work they are doing.”

When the new Literacy Center is completed, it will allow for more children to participate in the Boys & Girls Club reading program.

“Our mission is to enable and inspire all young people especially those who need us the most to reach their full potential as caring and productive citizens,” said Molly Hornbeak, director of the Boys & Girls Club. “When we heard that federal prisons were being built based on statistics of whether children were reading by the third grade, we thought that was mind-boggling. So, we started our Literacy Center Reading Program about six years ago. We are expanding because there were 100 members we could not get into our program.”

The reading program consists of two components: Lexia, a web-based learning program, where children can learn at their own pace, and a traditional reading program, where children receive one-on-one instruction. “We test all of our members to see where their reading levels are, and we target those who are reading 25 to 50 percent below grade level,” said Hornbeak.

The results of the program have been staggering, she said. “Any child who has been in our program for a year is today reading on their grade level or two levels above,” said Hornbeak.

“We are so privileged to partner with the Boys and Girls Club and the good work they are doing every day, pouring into the lives of children and making a difference for the rest of their lives,” said Best. “They do incredible work, and we are privileged to be a part of it.”

“I would like to thank Lowcountry Community Church for making us their choice,” said Hornbeak. “The donation is an absolute blessing.”
