Retailers, restaurants and service businesses continue to change the landscape in Bluffton and Hilton Head Island.
Here’s the latest in new construction, mergers, renovations, relocations, planned projects, commercial transactions, grand openings and closings.
• Hilton Head Island Airport welcomed the inaugural flight of United Airlines arriving on the tarmac with a traditional “water cannon” salute March 31. The next day, area stakeholders attended a press conference, ribbon cutting and celebration.
New service will be available from the island to Chicago, New York/Newark, and Washington/Dulles.
• Russo Seafood, 246 Red Cedar St., Bluffton. Owners of this third-generation, family-owned and operated business plan to build a 4,050 square-foot production and wholesale market facility this summer on a 1.37-acre site.
Based in Savannah since 1946, the company provides fresh quality shrimp, flounder, grouper, scallops, red snapper, trout, crabs and more to countless local restaurants.
• Snapfish Restaurant, 153 Arrow Road, Hilton Head Island. This “modern seafood shack” California-based international franchise will move into the half-acre property where a gas station and convenience store stood on the corner of U.S. 278 and Arrow Road for years.
The eatery will feature starters, originals, fish bowls and salads, as well as side options.
• Tanger Outlets, U.S. 278, Bluffton. Vera Bradley handbags, accessories and gifts and Southern Shades sunglasses will open this spring at Tanger 1, as will Aerie apparel and active wear at Tanger 2.
• Bad Biscuit, Dunnagan’s Alley, Hilton Head. Dave and Raina Peck, owners of Lowcountry Backyard restaurant in the Village Exchange, plan to open another eatery this spring.
The casual restaurant will seat patrons indoors and outdoors and serve Southern comfort food for breakfast and lunch. Build-your-own biscuits shine on the menu.
Grand openings, ribbon cuttings and closings:
• Old Town Bluffton Inn, 1321 May River Road, Bluffton, March 26. Old Town’s first hotel infuses old-style Southern charm in a boutique 14-room environment. The interior of each room, graced with a balcony, is individually designed. The hotel is within walking distance of galleries, restaurants and retail stores on Calhoun Street and in the Promenade.
“We are very proud of what we’ve built here in terms of this beautiful building, patterned after some of the South’s greatest historic structures,” said owner/operator Larry Leary. “But we’re prouder still of what we’ll continue to build – a new way for visitors to enjoy Old Town Bluffton.”
• Huntington Learning Center, 1050 Fording Island Road, Suite 406, Bluffton, March 27. With 40 years of experience nationwide, Huntington offers individual tutoring and test preparation for students in elementary, middle and high school. Kim Williams owns the local franchise.
• Go Store It, 5 Stockade Drive, Ridgeland, March 29. The new, state-of-the-art, climate-controlled facility offers high ceilings, push carts and keypad entry to each unit for added security. It also offers traditional non-climate controlled units in a variety of sizes. The self-storage company was founded in 2016.
