In another milestone event, your Bluffton Sun is publishing its first-ever (that we know of) editorial cartoon. A chance meeting with illustrator David Noyes of Hilton Head Island led to this association.
Noyes is an accomplished painter, illustrator and teacher with years of experience and many published works of art. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. He is an Emeritus Professor at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia.
His illustrations were first published in his teens, in the newspaper in his hometown of Hartford, Conn. In the 1970s, he went off to college, and upon his return, the newspaper got in touch again and asked him about drawing political cartoons for them.
Noyes later moved to Philadelphia, where he was commissioned to draw illustrations for the Philadelphia Inquirer, among other publications.
Over his career, Noyes has had illustrations, including covers, published in the likes of Sports Illustrated, Time, Life, Business Week and Harper’s.
Once, when working with U.S. News and World Report in the 1980s, he was asked to draw the portraits of all nine of the Supreme Court justices – overnight. “It killed me,” Noyes said. “But I did it.”
Noyes and his wife Janet moved to Hilton Head in 2013, where he is a member of the Art League of Hilton Head. He currently in working on a series of horse paintings.
