Spring is officially here. This means warmer weather with more events occurring in Old Town. It’s always an exciting time of the year due to locals and tourists alike getting out of the house and enjoying the outdoors.
While it’s wonderful to take the entire family for a walk or to a local event, Bluffton Police Department Chief Joey Reynolds wants everyone to remember that it’s important to be aware of your surroundings. Bluffton is a safe and happy place to live and visit, but remember to look around when you arrive at your destination, especially if you have young children.
Recently, we had close to 3,000 people in Old Town to see the Clydesdales, and another 5,000 enjoying the filming of “The Bachelorette” in various parts of town over a two-day period. These events are fun and exciting for you, your friends, children and grandchildren.
So before you leave the house, it’s recommended you sit down with your children and discuss where to go if you become separated. Do your children know your cell phone number? If they don’t, write it down and put it in their pockets.
Old Town continues to grow, with more restaurants and more places to shop, and I want everyone to remain safe. At any large festival, parade or event in Old Town, there’s always a police presence. That presence is there for you.
The police want to remind you they are here to help. If you lose your phone, purse or shopping bag, find one of the officers and file a report. If you need to know where to park or how to get somewhere, ask the police.
Last year, the Bluffton Police Department planned and managed 451 events. This year, there are expected to be more. We want everyone to come down to Old Town, enjoy the event, have fun and most importantly, stay safe.
