The LPGA Girls Golf Club of Bluffton is beginning its 11th year. The program is a national initiative with more than 500 chapters.

Two renowned LPGA professionals, Krista Dunton and myself, are directors of the local program. We also have a number of LPGA and PGA professionals instructing in the program.

We are proud to say that many of our participants are now playing at local high schools, and a number of our graduates are now playing at the college level.

This year, our program will include some of those older girls, who have been in the program in the past, to serve as mentors to the younger girls. We know that these mentors will be able to relate what golf has meant to them.

The Girls Golf program of Bluffton is open to all girls ages 7 to 17. Girls need no prior golf knowledge, and golf equipment is supplied to those who don’t have clubs. Girls who have previous knowledge and skill in golf will be able to advance their skills and have opportunities to play on the course.

This program is a perfect way for girls to learn how to play golf, develop existing golf skills, and work on their motor skill development. But the most important aspect of the program is for them to have fun and build new friendships. They will also learn respect and honesty that are values inherent in the game of golf.

This year’s program begins Jan. 14 with a visit to the PGA Tour Superstore. There will be a total of 10 meetings, including a field trip to the Heritage Golf Tournament in April.

The program meets bi-weekly on Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. Venues for the program include the First Tee of the Lowcountry, Rose Hill, Berkeley Hall, Colleton River, International Junior Golf Academy Learning Center, and Hilton Head Lakes. The program will end with a play day and party May 17.

Registration has now begun and the deadline is Jan. 10. Space is limited to the first 40 girls who register. The fee for the five-month program is $135, and scholarships are available.
