Two artists will offer different perspectives on the landscapes and natural life of the coastal South in an exhibition opening Oct. 29 at Four Corners Fine Art & Framing in Bluffton.
“Between Tide & Sky” features work by Lita Gatlin and Claire Powell and will remain on view through Nov. 21. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, giving visitors an opportunity to meet the artists.
The exhibition brings together Gatlin’s larger landscapes with Powell’s closer examination of subjects found within the coastal environment. Both artists work in oils and draw inspiration from the natural world.
Gatlin, a Georgia native who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, began drawing in pencil and ink at an early age. She transitioned to oil painting after college and began pursuing art full time in 2002 following a career in banking.
Her work focuses on the effects of changing light and atmosphere on the colors and character of a landscape. Her subjects include Lowcountry marshes, water and sky, along with the North Carolina mountains, European scenes and figurative work.
Powell also works primarily in oils, with paintings exploring nature, place and traditions of the coastal South. Her work combines realism with carefully composed scenes and draws inspiration from the landscape and wildlife around her.
Powell earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art education with a concentration in painting from the University of Georgia. She lives and works in coastal Georgia, where the changing light of the marsh is among the influences on her work. Her paintings are held in private collections throughout the Southeast.
The opening reception will include light refreshments and beverages.
