Bluffton exhibition highlights legacy of two illustrators

A new exhibition in Bluffton is placing a spotlight on illustration as both an art form and a cultural influence, featuring the work of two artists whose styles reflect different approaches to the medium.

“Influence & Inspiration: Two Icons Remembered” will open April 23 at Four Corners Fine Art & Framing, showcasing the work of illustrators Joe Bowler and Doug Corkern. The exhibit will run through May 21, with an opening reception scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m.

The exhibition explores how illustration has shaped visual storytelling across industries, from advertising and editorial work to architectural and regional studies. Organizers say the goal is to highlight illustration as a foundational discipline that connects technical skill with narrative and cultural impact.

Bowler, known for his mid-20th century advertising illustrations, developed a reputation for detailed, realistic imagery that conveyed emotion and narrative within a single frame. His work appeared in national advertising campaigns and helped define a style of visual storytelling associated with that era.

Corkern’s work, by contrast, focuses on the Lowcountry, with detailed renderings of architecture, landscapes and everyday scenes. His illustrations often document the region’s character, capturing both its natural environment and built spaces.

Presented together, the two artists reflect different but complementary traditions within illustration. Bowler’s work represents a broader national visual culture tied to commercial art, while Corkern’s focuses on regional identity and observation.

“Illustration has always been where artistry meets purpose,” the gallery said in a statement. “This exhibition is about recognizing the illustrators who shaped how we see the world, often without us even realizing it.”

Illustration has historically played a key role in communication, particularly before the rise of digital photography and design tools. While often associated with commercial use, it has also been recognized for its technical demands and artistic value.

The exhibit aims to encourage viewers to reconsider illustration’s place within the broader art world, organizers said.
