Kids should play golf

Posted

I was fortunate that my parents introduced me to golf at age 11. Playing golf helped me mature into a child who had dedication, not only to golf but also to my schoolwork. I learned time management at an early age.

The game helps children develop into responsible adults. It teaches traits such as honesty, courtesy, problem-solving and how to control emotions.

As an individual sport, it teaches children that they alone are responsible for their actions. They can’t blame referees, coaches or other players.

It is also something you can enjoy with family and friends. My son and I are very close because we played a lot of golf together when he was growing up. He now plays with his own son. I now love playing with my son and grandson, something I could not do in many other sports.

Golf also helps children with hand-eye coordination and balance. Overweight children can get into shape by walking the course and carrying their clubs.

Compared with football, soccer, basketball or baseball, children are less likely to get injured and it is a lifetime sport.

Parents interested in getting their children started can contact the First Tee of the Lowcountry, PGA Junior League or LPGA Girls Golf. Many courses also offer junior lessons and play days during the summer months.

Learning from a qualified golf professional is important. Children should be fitted with proper equipment for their size. Starter sets are affordable, and many golf shops allow trade-ins as children grow. Cutting down adult clubs is not recommended because they are too heavy and the grips are too large.

Looking back, I would tell my parents that introducing me to golf was one of the best things they ever did for me. Sixty years later, I still enjoy being around the game almost every day. I feel fortunate to work in a profession I love, where teaching and playing never gets boring.

Introducing the game at a young age can create lasting benefits. It is never too early to share golf with children or grandchildren.
