SC Humanities statewide tour to stop at Historic Mitchelville Nov. 7

SC Humanities will bring its statewide Ask Me Anything tour to Historic Mitchelville on Hilton Head Island from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 7, offering residents an opportunity to meet the organization’s executive director and discuss the history, culture and stories that shape their communities.

The free public event will feature Jennifer “Bingo” Gunter, executive director of SC Humanities, and Annemarie Reiley-Kay, deputy director and chief operating officer of the Coastal Discovery Museum.

Reiley-Kay will share insights into the impact of SC Humanities, which has previously partnered with the Coastal Discovery Museum.

The gathering is part of “SC Humanities Ask Me Anything: Communities. Conversations. Culture,” a seven-stop initiative designed to connect the organization with residents across South Carolina’s seven congressional districts.

The tour introduces Gunter, who became executive director in July 2025, while providing opportunities for community members to share their perspectives on local history, cultural traditions and the role of the humanities.

Discussions will address the organization’s work in local communities, the importance of the humanities, South Carolina’s cultural economy and priorities for future programming.

Each stop includes remarks from local hosts and community partners, a presentation from a local SC Humanities grant recipient and an open question-and-answer session.

Gunter, a historian specializing in the American South, previously held several positions at the University of South Carolina and served five years on the SC Humanities board of directors.

The statewide tour began Feb. 28 at the Aiken County Public Library and includes stops in communities across the state. The initiative is part of SC Humanities’ two-year strategic plan, with community feedback intended to help guide future programs and partnerships.

The Nov. 7 event is free and open to the public. Registration is requested.
