Bluffton resident Edwina Hoyle will mark the release of her first full-length novel, Broken Women, with a book signing and reading event Saturday, Oct. 4, at Memory Matters, 117 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head. The event, free to the public, runs from 2 to 4 p.m. A portion of all book sale proceeds will be donated to Memory Matters, a regional nonprofit devoted to dementia care and brain health services.
Broken Women is a sweeping work of historical fiction and family saga. The story begins in Eastern Europe under Russian occupation, then follows characters who emigrate to America around the turn of the 20th century. Themes include trauma, resilience, courage, and the complex bond between mothers and daughters. The narrative explores how secrets and suffering can ripple across generations—and how forgiveness, love, and the support of caring men help heal wounds.
Hoyle holds a degree in Journalism and Political Science from Marquette University. Over her career she has written hundreds of feature stories, editorials and marketing materials. In addition to her journalism and public relations work, she has held leadership roles in the nonprofit sector. Her longtime service includes involvement with Memory Matters, where for more than a decade she has supported programs that assist individuals with memory loss and their caregivers. Memory Matters offers day programs, caregiver education and respite, memory screenings, support groups and other services in southern Beaufort and Jasper counties.
Hoyle is also active locally as a freelance writer, copy editor, and contributor to publications such as the Bluffton/Hilton Head Sun, Pink Magazine and Lydia Inglett Publishing. She is a member of Island Writers’ Network, a Lowcountry writers’ group that promotes local authors, organizes meetings and showcases member works.
Organizers say the Oct. 4 event gives readers a chance not only to meet Hoyle and hear excerpts from Broken Women, but also to support a vital community institution. Signed copies of the novel will be available.
