With spring underway in the Lowcountry, a familiar Bluffton tradition has returned to the banks of the May River.
Now in its 14th year, Bluffton Sunset Parties have become a staple for residents and visitors looking to unwind with live music, food and waterfront views. Sunset Palooza, part of the series, is set for Friday, May 15, at Oyster Factory Park.
The evening will feature performances by Vannah & The Rump Shakers, with special guest The Too Psyched Band, along with local food vendors, craft beer and wine.
What began as a small community gathering has grown into a well-attended seasonal series, drawing hundreds to the park each month.
“The real purpose of doing it was to give Bluffton a sense of community and to bring everybody together,” said organizer Mark Weisner, whose company Bear Foot Sports produces the events.
Early events drew an estimated 500 to 600 people, he said, and the series quickly expanded. Today, organizers aim to host about six events each year, typically once a month, though weather can sometimes disrupt plans.
Held along the May River, the gatherings draw attendees by car, golf cart, bicycle or boat, many bringing lawn chairs and pets to settle in for the evening.
“We work hard on that vibe to make sure that everybody’s welcome and everyone has a great time,” Weisner said.
The event also maintains a strong local focus, with bands often tied to the area and sponsors based in the community. Organizers have partnered with nonprofit groups since the beginning.
“My company is based on partnering with charities, so that was always part of the formula from day one,” he said.
The May event will benefit the Bluffton Historic Foundation, which operates the Heyward House and supports preservation efforts in the area.
While the series has grown, organizers say preserving its original feel remains important.
“I try to keep that,” Weisner said. “Local bands, local sponsors … it’s all part of it.”
Sunset Palooza will run from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Oyster Factory Park. Tickets are $14 in advance or $20 at the door, with free admission for children 12 and under. Tickets and additional information are available at blufftonsunsetparty.com.
“For the people that have supported us, thank you,” Weisner said. “If you haven’t been to one, you need to come check them out.”
